When I attempt a backup, it runs apparently to completion -- the log on the tablet screen ends with "Backup completed successfully", but the Companion app (on MacOS Tahoe 26.2 running on a Mac Mini) reports "The backup has failed. There may be problems with the tablet backing up the files or a connectivity problem".

Is there anywhere I can look for a log file of the backup to look for additional error messages?
Unfortunately, there aren't any log files, but if you don't click OK on that box, and go to where the backup file would have been output, is it there? If so, it may be perfectly valid (or close to error free) if the backup reached 100%. I'll run some additional tests to see if I can reproduce that though.

sommerfield, one way to check whether the backup worked is to create a new library on your tablet and restore using the backup.
Check whether the total number of songs is the same in the original library and the newly restored library. You can dig deeper and check a few of the songs to check that the content of songs has been backed up correctly.
When you are done you can delete the new library on your tablet.

It's not there. I noticed a single large and growing file in there as the backup was running, but it disappeared by the time the error popup appeared (the directory was empty again before I clicked "OK" in that box).
One more edit: the library is perhaps on the large side for a first use of MobileSheets as it's the accumulated sheet music of a big band I play in -- about 3.2 gigabytes across about 400 pdf files with all ~17 parts in each file (so most are about 30-60 pages of which my part is 2 or 3 pages but I may need to look at or occasionally cover a different part); once I get further along I'll be creating .csv's to narrow down the view to just my part.
I tried again and now have a successful backup - it ran to completion and created a *.msb file that is 3520818113 bytes long.
Only thing of note I changed in MobileSheets is that I created a setlist -- prior to this I had created two collections but no setlists; if you're looking to reproduce I'd suggest trying to back up a tablet with no setlists but a bunch of files and collections.
Can you view the actual file sizes of the individual songs ? (in case you have one that is excessively long).

The longest file is 58,554,694 bytes long; the top 10 are all over 35MB and the 50 largest are all over 20MB.
Doesn't look like any extreme outliers. But as I mentioned earlier, I got a successful backup after I created my first setlist. Dunno if that had anything to do with the problems I was having -- see
