Still playing with Nextcloud, and trying libraries.

When files are imported from Nextcloud, they are copied to library dependent (sub)folders.

When files are imported from local media, they are used 'in situ'.

I think it would be useful to have the option for local import to copy the files to library dependent (sub)folders.

Rationale is that when I have a collection of song files on local storage, and want to use these in a (new) MS library, the intention is in most cases to have independent copies so file modifications will not affect other use.

If you have the library set up to use isolated storage and you have enabled the option to let MobileSheets manage your files, it absolutely will copy files into library subfolders. I can only assume you've turned off the option to let MobileSheets manage your files if this is not happening.

That option is, indeed, unchecked. I did not take that into account since import from cloud always copies regardless.
