I know it is a big ask! It would great to be able to import .mxl and have a very basic transpose function. Maybe someone should invent an advanced .pdf format that supports transposition...

This is a request which has come up before (also in the context of the request for ABC support) and Mike has already  put it on his todo list. But it's a major addition and I think it's quite down the list for now.

The more users request it the sooner Mike will attend to it. So good of you to bring it up "again".

It's on my list of things to do, but it will require a huge amount of changes. Unlike PDF which contains an image to render (making it fairly straightforward), a musicXML file just contains note information and the application has to then render all of the sheet music itself. This requires a lot of vector graphics and using music fonts to generate characters at all the right positions. It's a pretty large undertaking. Having said that, I think there may be some open source libraries that will help with this, and will reduce the burden at least somewhat, so that should accelerate the work once I'm able to focus on this.

Mike has announced that ABC support is coming soon. As soon as ABC is supported it will be an option to convert .MXL files to ABC. I would do that with MuseScore and the plugin ABCImpEx https://musescore.org/en/project/abc-importexport
If somebody knows other options, e.g. an ABC editor that can open .mxl and save it as ABC please let us know.

I also encourage you (and Mike) to look up the other ABC tools on Wim's page, especially the conversion scripts.

I still think Jef DeMoines abc2svg scripts in conjunction with Wim's tools would be a viable way to get ABC support to MS including the capacity to edit songs WYSIWYG (in ABC), easy transposition and MXML import and export with it.

I know this is an old thread, but I found it while searching for MobileSheets MusicXML. I would love to have this option! One of the apps I use while I transition away from fake books is iRealPro. It's super convenient, but if I wish to have all my music in one app, MobileSheets, I would love to export from iRealPro into MusicXML and import back into MobileSheets, with transposition capability. 

@itsme, now that MobileSheets can support ABC notation, does your proposed process work? source -> MusicXML - MuseScore -> abcnotation?

ABC is really for notation, not chord charts. Chordpro format is best for chord charts. You can already export iReal to MusicXML, then MusicXML to Chordpro and pull into MobileSheets. Then you can transpose at will within MobileSheets. I don't think Mike needs to add any new functionality for this. It already exists.

MuseScore can import MusicXML and with the ABC ImpEx plugin it can save as ABC. That works fine so far.

Nevertheless I switched to a far easier process: Michael Eskin's ABC Tools https://michaeleskin.com/abctools/abctools.html can open both .musicxml (uncompressed Music XML) and .mxl (compressed Music XML) files, even with multi-selection of many files, e.g. a whole folder at a time. Multiple files create at first glance a multi-tune ABC file, but exporting the tunes as separate files, one song per ABC file (as it is the best for MobileSheets) is just a few clicks away.

Both methods are so easy and work so fine that imho it is not worth the effort to support native musicxml in MobileSheets.

mdavej is right, the main intention of the ABC standard is standard notation. It can somehow display chord sheets also, I never tried that.

The ChordPro app is actually pretty useless. I don't use it either. I just do everything in Notepad. You just need to understand the syntax. It's pretty simple. You can even edit Chordpro files inside of MobileSheets.

I do agree that some sort of app that went directly from iReal to Chordpro would be nice. Such a thing shouldn't be terribly difficult to code. I may even give it a try myself at some point.
