The camera import feature seems to work pretty slickly. But it insists on saving the piece under the default title (like "20260109-170920"). Renaming it prior to saving appears to have no effect.
Am I missing something?

The filename uses the data and time in milliseconds in order to avoid naming conflicts. You can rename the file on the Files tab after it is created (tap the three dots and then tap "Rename File").

Okay. I guess allowing the file name field in the image capture interface to be editable is the glitch. Thanks.

Can you please take a screenshot and show me what you are referring to? There is no option that I can find to change the filename as you are capturing the images.

That's not while you are taking the image - that's after the file has been created. And that's where the rename option is that I mentioned. There is nothing there that is editable. So I'm not sure what glitch you are talking about. Also, please note that the song title listed on the Fields tab is completely separate from any file name. While the title is populated by the filename by default if you have not entered a title, you have to edit that title after the fact if you take a picture (even if you rename the file).

My remark about the file name field being "editable" was misleading.
Here is the sequence I am using:
1. Take the photo
2. Click "Done"
3. Click the 3-dots for the pull-down
4. Click "Rename File" on the menu
5. Rename the File in the "Rename File" dialog.
6. Click "OK" (file name now displays as the new name in the Files list)
7. Click "OK" in top banner
8. File appears in the collection under the original canonical name, and not the new name.

A song and a file are two different things in MobileSheets - a song can contain multiple files, and the name of the files they use does not have to match their title. The title you see on the library screen is the song title which you change on the fields tab.

Okay. I get it.
So what am I doing when I "Rename File" in my step 5? What effect does that have, and how does that appear to me as a result within MobileSheets? Or should the user in general just ignore files and their names.

It renames the file in the storage of the device. It doesn't rename the title displayed on the library screen (that's controlled on the Fields tab). It has very little impact in terms of what you see in MobileSheets, which is why I didn't even supporting renaming files for a long time (as the application is set up so that most users don't have to think about things in terms of files as much). Unless you care about how your files are organized, how they are named, etc, you don't need to care about the filename. Just change the song title to match what you want to see.
