In the few posts I've asked questions in so far, I've had quite useful responses.
I have, till now, reacted by clicking on the Rating icon, but wonder if this is how it's done here usually?
Or is it better to actually reply with a "Thank you" message?

I don't think there's a given etiquette. Just be polite and leave some feedback every now and then (as you already do).
