For some users, free text is probably desired on some fields, but for me, both Keywords, Custom and Custom2 would benefit from "group field" functionality (exactly as Genre, Collection etc.) for auto completion, dropdown selection and batch management. With the current functionality I have to type out every single keyword (tags/type/location), arranger (Custom) and part type (Custom2) for every piece. Could this functionality be an option to enable along with the rename Custom category setting? That way, users in need of free text can keep default functionality, while users who rather needs more metadata fields can activate this. Another option could be to allow free control of how many custom fields (and/or tabs) you can create, and whether they are free text or grouped, as users have different metadata needs anyway (i.e. in my case I've hidden a lot of the default fields as they are irrelevant to me, but I also need other fields beyond the defaults, which I have to use the free text fields for currently).

Requests like that have been already discussed many times. Imho the most flexible and least confusing solution would be to add a number of additional fields and additional groups and allow renaming for all custom groups and custom fields as it is already the case for the existing custom group.
