I can confirm that. If {start_of_grid 1+4x4+1} is used, grid comments get small enough to fit into the margins. With {start_of_grid shape="1+4x4+1"} grid comments use the same font size as grid chords. No wonder, shape= syntax is pretty new in ChordPro. The behaviour should be the same, grid comments shall be shrunk to fit into the margins.
Changing Eddie's example from {start_of_grid shape="1+4x4+1"} to {start_of_grid 4+4x4+2} I noticed that in this case the size calculation is not fully correct
