Stamps are great: there's a huge selection. But the way the tool works at present doesn't make sense to me.

How it works at present:

- I choose the stamps tool, then click on the little triangle to open the stamps palette.
- When I choose another tool, the stamps palette stays open. This serves no useful purpose. All it does now is to cover part of the score, so I close the palette.
- When I need a stamp again, I must first click on the stamps tool, then click on the little triangle again.

How I'd like it to work:

- When I choose a tool other than the stamps tool, the stamps palette should automatically close.
- When I choose the stamps tool again, the stamps palette should automatically open.

I used to support that mode of operation and people did not like it. That's why it was removed. They thought it was confusing to have the stamps window operate differently in two different places, and many users wanted it to be available to quickly change stamps. You can collapse the window layout by the way so that it's only a horizontal or vertical list with a single column or row.

I don't understand what you mean by having the stamps window operate differently in two different places. My wish is that it should be open if and only if the stamps tool is chosen. Where are the two different places?

In order to cater for both those who want the functionality I propose and those who prefer to have the stamps palette open no matter which tool is chosen, you could add an option to allow the user to chose if they wish to close the stamps palette when leaving the stamps tool.

Finale (sadly no longer being developed) works like this: it has more than one tool with a subsidiary palette, and includes the option "close subsidiary palettes when leaving tool".
