Unable to import from Google Drive (Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Utra, Android Version 16)
#1
Howdy all!

I'm running into what may be a common issue - I am unable to import my charts from Google Drive.  When I try, I get the message Cannot access "root"

I'm using:
  • MobileSheets version 3.9.38 (build 582) from Google Play
  • Android version 16, security patch level February 5, 2026
  • Device: Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra 14.6" 256GB

I'm logged into the phone & Google Drive with my personal email.

Any advise on how I could enable this feature?  Importing from (or syncing to) Google Drive would be the ideal way for me to keep my charts up to date!

It can sometimes be difficult to figure out the causes of these failures. I know that some users utilize extra security features through Google such as the Advanced Protection Program. If you utilize that, it disables third party access to Google Drive. So you would have to use Import->System File Browser and import files through the Google Drive app through that. If you aren't utilizing additional security features, then the only way to get to the bottom of this would be for me to send you a diagnostic build with additional logging so we can (hopefully) locate where the error is occurring. If the error is happening deep within Google's framework, then there would be no easy solution. If you want to go down the path of installing a diagnostic build, message me at mike@zubersoft.com.

Same problem, Android 14, Megapad tablet, no security features turned on whatsoever (not even a passcode).  It never asked for any permissions, either, though the preview version might have asked when I installed that previously.

I'll drop you a line.

I managed to get it working on mine.  See if this works for you.  While on the file chooser screen where that error message appears:

  1. Tap the cloud icon at the top right corner of the screen.
  2. Tap the Google Drive button in the pop-up.
  3. Tap the Allow button in the permissions dialog to allow the app to access Google Drive.

After doing that, it is working as expected for me, including when I tap into Google Drive form the import menu.  Before doing that, I was getting the exact same error that you were.

Opening the Google Drive import from the main screen is failing to trigger the permissions dialog for some reason, while the other path through the cloud menu works as expected.

Although I don't know the Google Drive API and therefore can't say with absolute certainty that this is not a bug on the API side, the fact that a slightly different path through the app UI triggers the expected behavior gives me a strong suspicion that this is a straightforward app bug.

Hope that helps (both the user and the app developers in finding and fixing the bug).

It looks like this is a bug I introduced while trying to improve the error reporting if something goes wrong during the Google Drive account authentication. I didn't realize this happens if MobileSheets has not been granted the permissions. I had to revoke access through my Google account before I could properly retest that. I'll get a fix in place for the next update.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks for the updates!  I'll give it a try again when the next update is released.

The update is available now, so after updating to version 3.9.39, you can try it again and it should prompt you for the permissions.
