I'm not sure that I understand the concept correctly.

I have a folder in my Nextcloud that contains a backup of my database (this has been created using the Windows version as it's easier for me to edit annotations etc).

I can access said folder and chose it and it is shown correctly.

The active library has the correct name and I chose "Sync/Refresh Device" (I use the German version, so the screenshots are in German, also, and I have to translate back).

On activating sync I get a message that the chosen directory does not contain a library and do I want to upload the device's.

If I do this, I will have at least the libraries of 3 devices in the cloud which all contain the same data.

What do I do wrong?

Now I see...

Instead of sync'ing the library it copies each file (PDF/audio).

While doing that I get several errors, always regarding an audio file.

All of the files play fine (on all devices) but won't sync, so in the end I deleted them from the device and copied them manually to the folder I created for Nextcloud sync'ing (as a subfolder to my normal MS backup folder).

On restarting the initial sync it transfers all of the files again instead of recognizing which ones are already in the remote directory.

As the first syncing takes quite some time, I do still wonder if I can use THAT folder for the other devices, though.

The idea with the synchronization is that it uploads an entire copy of your library along with a modified version of the database file (where the paths are all stored relative to the cloud folder). This allows other devices to synchronize to this same folder to compare their database to the one in the cloud folder to find differences so that they only process those differences. A backup file is a completely different thing from this. You can backup the library to a .msb file, and then restore the entire library from a .msb file, but this is an all or nothing approach. It replaces the entire library with whatever is in the backup file. I would not recommend synchronizing with a backup file, as that is only for very specific situations (and you cannot update an existing backup file with this, as some users are confused by that, it's only for updating the library from a backup file).

You do need to complete a synchronization so that all of the necessary files are generated. If the sync never finishes, then the files won't be created and it will always show that you have to upload the library. You can ignore audio files with the sync if needed to get past errors, or delete the audio files causing issues. If there seems to be errors with every audio file when using nextcloud, let me know and I can test this to see if I can reproduce any issues.

I should mention that I did just synchronize a library containing audio files to Nextcloud and encountered no problems.

I have only problems with some audio files while others are synced fine.

Will try to finish an initial sync with PDF-only and add the mp3s manually to the folder.

All this is now on Android.

When do you think Windows will get Nextcloud sync?

There were still some errors during audio sync but as I had copied the original files to the cloud folder, the sync finished without stopping as before.

What I do not understand:

I can set "Sync in both directions" (at the top) and "Use data from song which has last been edited" (bottom) but what do the following settings do if the former are set?

- Check new files in cloud folder
- Search for new files and sync songs in both libraries

Maybe it's too early after only 2 syncs to tell...

Only the initial sync takes a long time, as all files have to be uploaded. Subsequent synchronizations should be very fast. Windows will get Nextcloud support with the next update for Windows, but I'm not sure on the exact timeline yet, as there are a lot of changes I have to port over.

I would generally recommend using a one-way sync. Push changes from one device, and pull changes to the other device. This is far more reliable than using the two-way sync, and you'll run into far fewer potential problems. Most users do not need to enable the two settings you've mentioned - they are only for specific use case scenarios. So I would recommend leaving them off in your case.

I usually make all edits on a Windows machinge and sync them to all devices.

The 2-way would only have smaller edits to annotations which I write down on paper or in my phone right now to edit them at home.

I just opened my e-ink Boox which has Android but no Nextcloud but I guess this will be in the next update, then.

Version 3.9.40 is available for e-ink devices, so you should have access to Nextcloud on it. Can you please go to Settings->About to see which version you are running on your e-ink device?

Every other sync on the 2nd to 4th device after the initial one took only a few seconds.

That's for a library containing about 3 GB of PDFs and MP3s.

Essentially I keep all my sheetmusic for any band I am or was in in there and some manuals, also.
