Tempo
#1
Hi,

The "tempo" field is purely numeric, which prevents the entry of musical tempo indications such as andante, allegro, etc. Would it be possible to change this input to text instead of numeric, or to provide a new type of field for entering tempos? Thank You.

The musical tempo indicators don't have an exact bpm, they a range of speed or rather a pace at which a piece of music is played. Allegro could be anything from 110 to 150 depending on what the player interprets so how would you translate this to the metronome in MSP?

No, the tempo field is designed only to be used with numbers. You can utilize a different field if you would like text, such as custom or custom2.

Admittedly, tempo markings like andante or adagio use ranges rather than a precise number, and custom fields exist for specifying them. However, when dealing with tempi, it's clear that tempo markings are more modern and precise, but also more restrictive for interpretive choices. For this reason, and based on common practice, it seems less appropriate to separate bpm and musical tempo terms in the database, when a single text field would allow for both. Technically, I don't understand where the limitation lies. In any case, thank you for this excellent program.

This is because the tempo field is tied tightly to the metronome which needs a numeric value to use for the tempo (and I don't want to have to try to convert words describing tempos to numeric values that can be used). It also makes the data validation a heck of a lot easier versus having to stop the user from entering invalid tempo values. There's also a lot of code over the entire application that expects a number for the tempo, not a word.

I agree. Also the (numeric) tempo probably will be changed by players a few beats much more often than text tempo indicators. So why not use a simple text annotation in the song?

@giga17
Did you notice that there are text tempo indicators shown in the metronom window which change according to the numeric input?
