Annotations sync problem
#1
Hi,

I'm using two interconnected tablets in 2 pages mode. I annotate music sheets by adding texts or drawings. But when I synchronize the libraries with the sync function, the annotations made on the second tab are lost.
Is there a way to synchronize the annotations on both tablets and merging the annotations layer automatically without having to choose the right or the left version?

Thanks in advance for the help.

You need to enable the "synchronize annotations" option on the "New Leader" dialog. I can only assume that this setting is currently disabled on your device, as otherwise the annotations would be synchronized as you create them. Please note that you cannot merge existing annotations from two different devices. You have to choose one or the other. That is because there is no clean way to merge annotations without the possibility of duplicates and other issues. This is because annotations can't be uniquely and accurately identified, and there is no guarantee that the two databases match up as far as IDs and such.

Thank you Mike for the explanations.

But the "synchronize annotations" option is already checked on the server side. I enabled the option ask before merging and it displays that annotations are on layer #1 on the client tablet (so, as I understand, on the same layer as the server) and ask to chose which version to chose.
Would it be possible to reserve a layer #1 for the server tablet and a layer #2 on the client tablet?
So when the sync is executed, it could merge both layers without conflict?

You are misunderstanding - I'm not talking about the library synchronization feature. I'm talking about the "Connect Tablets" feature, which is what I assume you are using if you have the tablets connected in a two page mode. There is an option on the "Connect Tablets->New Leader" dialog for synchronizing annotations between the leader and follower tablet.

You can't currently choose which layers are used from each device with the library synchronization feature unless you change the merge behavior to "Prompt user for decision" and then make decisions for each annotation I believe. In the future I may support limiting the synchronization to specific layers.

Thank you Mike for these additional information.

Unfortunatly the option is already activated. And when I make annotations (insert some text using the text tool for example) on the leader, the follower doesn't have these annotations. In the same manner, if I make some annotations on the followers, it doesn't appear on the leader.
Can you please explain how to have the annotations on both tablets?

Did you actually tap the X icon to close the annotations editor? The annotations aren't sent over until the changes are saved, so I just want to verify this.

Yes  I close the annotation editor with the X icon.

Can you please take a screenshot of the selections you've made on the new leader dialog so I can see what you have selected? Also, please open the settings dialog on the follower (Connect Tablets, and then the Settings button) and let me know if you've unchecked "Let leader sync annotations". Lastly, if you are connecting over bluetooth, does it all work if you instead connect over WiFi? I'm just trying to identify the root of the problem on your devices.

Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike,

I've uploaded the requested screenshots in attachment : the leader connection panel,  the leader settings and the follower settings.

I tried with the wifi option, and the behaviour is the same. No annotation is exchanged between both tablets.

Best regards

Thank you Aurelien. That is so very strange. I will run more tests, but I have not encountered that issue with annotations not being sent across devices. I'm assuming this occurs even if you import a brand new PDF on both devices and annotate that song/piece, correct? Also, I'm assuming you are not using the "Reconnecting using last settings" option, and that you clicked through and tapped OK, then clicked on the leader from the other device and tapped "Join Group".

Dear Mike,

I think I've found the problem. It occurs only when I use accentuated characters in the title.  If I remove them, the synchronization works perfectly
I hope this will help you.

Best regards

Are you using two Android devices? Or are you connecting an Android to iOS? I just want to verify this.

Thanks,

Both tablets are two identical Android devices.

Thank you - I'll try using various song titles that contain various unicode characters like umlauts, but it might be helpful if you can provide an example of a title that did not work.

Thanks,
Mike
