Annotations causing crashes
#1
Hi,

I'm still having some problems with annotation causing crashes. I have crash reports on, I've just had one at 10:02am GMT 22/07/2026.

It's a Surface Pro 11 (details at bottom of message), I've got GPU off for the annotation editor (I've experimented with it on but sometimes annotations don't show at all or on intermittend pages when it's turned on). I do add quite a lot of annotations to my scores although only in a single layer, and it means that Mobilesheets is much less reliable then I would like it to be - it crashes sometimes when exiting annotation mode, and occasionally in performance mode when I turn a page it will just go to the loading ring and I have to go out of the score and back into it, and sometimes have to reload Mobilesheets entirely. In addition if I go to rearrange pages it sometimes struggles to display all of the pages within that dialogue. I always do a full restart before each concert and so far it's been fine but I do find it stressful that it seems to be less stable on this device than on previous Surfaces.

If there's anything else I can do to help it be more stable that would be great!

All best wishes,

Ben

Are you using the Microsoft Store version or the FastSpring version? It looks like you need the ARM64 version of the application for the best stability, so I just want to verify you have that. Are you working with many highlight annotations? If so, turning off the option to draw highlights behind content will significantly increase the rendering speed, as pixel blending is then not needed. You could consider embedding the annotations in the PDF so that they don't have to be rendered by MobileSheets, but there are downsides to that (they become more difficult to edit, it can potentially cause instability with the PDF library in some cases, and the appearance of annotations may not match up perfectly).

I am switching the Windows version over to WinUI 3 right now which will improve application performance, and in doing this I'm also switching to the very latest versions of Skia (the rendering library), so it's possible you will get a major increase in performance on your device once this is available.

Hi Mike,

Thanks as usual for the speedy reply!

I'm on version 3.9.41 from the Microsoft Store so I think I'm on the ARM64 version already?

You're absolutely right, all of my annotations were on 75% opacity as I thought it had a nice pen like quality but I can definitely do without that. I've turned it off and it feels to me like it is already performing better as everything feels much more instantaneous.

All best wishes,

Ben

If that solution is will work for now, stick with that, but we can revisit this once the WinUI 3 version is released, as I do want you to be able to use that setting if you prefer the appearance.
