To run MobileSheets on, I have always been a huge fan of those old gigantic 21 inch screen devices running Android (4.x!
) that were available over 10 years ago.
I am talking about devices like the “Acer da220hql” or the “HP 21 Slate All in one”, which I have both owned. Great for full size 2 page side by side display.
They did not contain a battery, so they were more targetted at a fixed location MobileSheets set up, but at 4 kgs, they were still movable if necessary, although they needed a nearby power supply.
Sadly (for me at least) such extremely big screen Android devices are no longer made/sold ….. I thought.
And then I stumbled upon the “iiyama Prolite TWW2223SAS-B3P” which is a 21.5 inch touch screen, marketed as an digital signage device which is running Android 14, and has the Google Play store installed. (it also doubles as a PC/Laptop screen via HDMI). It currently sells over here in Belgium at € 419.
After some hesitation, I decided to take the (small) gamble - there is a 30 day return policy - and ordered the iiyama for running MobileSheets on.
Installing MobileSheets on it and restoring a MS backup turned out to be a piece of cake.
The screen has 3 USB A ports, so connecting to one of my keyboards (Yamaha PSR SX900 in this case) and to my Roland PK6 midi pedals was no issue at all and I had the whole thing running and communicating in under 15 minutes. (and that includes setting up Android)
All in all I am very happy with the purchase.
The fact that the device is targetted as a digital signage display does come with some consequences though.
- There is no camera. So Face Gestures cannot be used.
- It is ment to be wallmounted. So it cannot stand by itself. It has a Vesa connector though, so a separate stand can be used.
- It only has limited memory (32 GB) half of which is beeing used by the OS. Which is not an issue for me.
- It automatically powers up, as soon as it receives electrical power.
- There will probably be no Android updates at all …
- It has no battery, and needs to be connected to a power source to be used. Just like those old 21” devices.
- The screen is very bright. I have the brightness slider at the complete minimum, and it is still bright enough for indoor use. Blacklevels are very good. Sharpness could maybe be a tad better.
But as I said, I am very happy with my purchase.
Maybe worth a look for those favouring that gigantic screen.
